1. Ask about discounts

Your agent can tell you which discounts are available.

Empty Nest Discounts
Cincinnati Equitable offers a special "Empty Nest" Discount. If you're over 40 and your children are grown, the household cars now have less exposure. It's time to be rewarded with a premium discount.

Other Discounts
For automobile insurance, ask about discounts for loss-free claims records, multi-car, anti-theft devices, company car, good student, drivers' training, and senior (over 65) driving school.

For homeowner's insurance, ask about discounts for smoke detectors and security systems.

2. Place your Auto and Home Insurance with the same company

Most companies offer a car/home discount or a multi-car discount for several cars from the same household.

3. Raise your deductible

The deductible is the amount you agree to pay in the event of a loss. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.

4. Drive safely

Your driving record makes a difference. Tickets and accidents raise premiums.

5. How far do you drive?

If your driving habits have changed since you bought your policy, let your agent know. Less driving may lower your rates.

6. Pay your premium annually or semi-annually

If you can manage larger payments once a year or every six months, you'll save money on your annual insurance expenditures.

7. Choose your car model based on insurance premiums

Larger cars are generally safer and often eligible for discounts. Some models are stolen more frequently. Sports cars are fun to drive, but premiums are higher. Your agent can compare rates for you before you buy a car.

8. Students, keep your grades up

Although drivers under 25 have nearly twice as many accidents as older adults, students with high grades are often eligible for discounts. A student who completes a driver's training course can also earn lower rates.

9. Report fraud

Today's experts estimate that insurance premiums are 10% - 20% higher due to fraud. Fraud not only costs money, it also endangers innocent individuals and their property.

10. Take pride in ownership

Maintenance and upkeep on your home can prevent unnecessary household damage. Fire alarms and smoke detectors may earn discounts on your premium.

11. The right coverage can save you money at claim time

There is nothing that costs more money than having inadequate coverage at claims time. Have you told your insurance agent about personal possesions such as jewelry, collectibles, guns, antiques, cameras, silverware or personal computers?

12. Update your coverage regularly

Inventory your possessions and increase coverage on your property and its contents regularly as values increase.
